No School for Special Children
There are 112 primary schools, 34 middle schools and 23 high schools Wokha, but not one for children with special need. However, the Right to Education bill' 2009, for the first time, gives disabled children statutory right to education. Clause 3 (2) of the bill specifically mentions that a disabled child "shall" have the right to free and compulsory education in accordance with chapter V of the Disabilities Act.
Children Carry Trash Not Books
The children of Solan in Himachal Pradesh have access to schools and a right to free education. Yet many of them will not be fou`nd in school on a typical day. Instead they can be found picking waste or engaged in other labor deemed accessible to children. As people of poor and marginalized backgrounds, their families say the small income generate by the children is necessary for the family to survive.
Ironsmiths’ Children Yearn For Education

The Gadia Lohar people are a nomadic tribe. Sunita Kasera, the correspondent of this video, recently met about 50 families living in makeshift huts with their children. These children also want to go to school, but cannot for the simple reason that there there isn’t a school to go to.

Discrimination and atrocities on Dalit communities is one of the ugly realities of India that refuses to decrease. In fact the number of registered cases of atrocities on Dalits in last 1 decade (1981-2000) was 31171. According to a National Human Rights Commission report, the conviction rate under SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act, which was introduced to curb violence and crime against Dalits, is only 15.71% and pendency rate (cases filed, but not yet dealt with) is as high as 85.37%.
Government Ignores Preschoolers
Under the Anganwadi system in India, it was legislated that even pre-school children have a right to schooling. In Karnataka preschoolers find themselves attending “school” in any space the teacher might find. Often they are located in one child’s yard, or the patio of a larger house.
Education Miles Away
Realizing the Right to Education will be a large challenge in the Northeast.
In Manipur many children travel long distances to reach decent schools. Many do not attend the government schools due to a lack of proper infrastructure, teachers and supplies.
